We Know The Feeling: Christina Duran (Beatport Denver)
6 September, 2010 | 7.55AMBeatport is a crazy place. I don’t want to start an ego massage at the risk of turning this place into a day spa, but the creative types are bountiful within these walls. It seems like most everyone around here not only has loads of talent, but also a unique passion. One such representative of our staff is Christina Duran. She’s a spicy, pint-sized package with main stage talents. Remember Superman? Piss-poor reporter, but a hell of a crime fighter… Well, Christina got both of her grounds covered solidly; an integral part of the Beatport system by day and captivating crowd rocker by night.
We had to wait until Christina slowed to a blur to hit her up for ‘We Know The Feeling’ and here (finally) are the results.
Where did you grow up?
Born and raised in Denver, Colorado.
What was the first album you purchased?
The first album I ever purchased was “Blast The Speakers” by The Warp Brothers. My Dad already had the good, old school records like Newcleus and Kraftwerk that he eventually gave to me.
What were some of your earliest musical influences?
Herbie Hancock – Rockit, does that say enough?
When and how did you get into Electronic music?
My father introduced me to Electronic music when I was a kid, after that it was on!
It wasn’t until high school when I really started getting more into the underground scene. Like most people I started going to ‘parties’ and haven’t stopped loving the music and the culture since.
Have your tastes evolved since then?
Yes and no. I’ve always been the person to say, ‘if it sounds good, I like it.’ I don’t care what genre it’s classified under. I find myself liking more deep underground tracks now more then I thought I would. Beatport has definitely opened the doors to many different sounds and now I appreciate all styles.
What’s the best thing about living in Denver?
My family, friends, and Beatport of course. I could honestly live without the snow though.
What do you do here at Beatport and how long have you been with the company?
I am the Sr. Manager of Content Operations and also a Product Expert. I have been with Beatport for about 3 years now.
In layman’s terms, what does that mean?
I make sure all the content lands safely and is pushed onto the site.
In what way has Beatport changed your life?
Where do I begin? Beatport has changed my life in so many ways. Beatport has taught me so much about music and culture that I never knew existed. I’m so proud to be a part of something so wonderful.

Do you produce or perform?
Both! DJ Mear is 10 years in the making. I have not produced anything that I am proud of yet, but I know I am well on my way.
What’s your production set up like?
Ableton Live, Akai APC40, and a microKORG.
Preferred method of mixing?
Vinyl! I just can’t seem to steer away from it. Serato, oh how I love thee.
Can you tell us more about where you’ve performed in the past? Do you have any upcoming releases or appearances?
I pretty much got all of Denver knocked out, but outside of Denver just California. No upcoming releases or appearances at the moment, let’s just say I am taking a long break.
Top three producers/ DJs?
Gee, this one is hard since they change all the time.
Right now I am into Bart B. More, Santiago & Bushido
, and Chocolate Puma
.
Top three tracks you’ve heard in the past 3 months?
Noir ‘Gangstarr (M.in & Patrick Lindsey Remix) ’
Egyptrixx, ‘Drive U Crazy’
Reset Robot, ‘La Porte’
Favorite eatery?

My mom’s house for Mexican food. Love me some green chili!
What do you want for Christmas?
A Mini Chopper.
If it weren’t for Beatport, where would you be now?
LOST! and figuring out how I can work for Beatport!
Craziest thing that’s ever happened in the DJ booth?
Well, lets just say nothing can top having a crowd in front of you dancing and you’re throwing down the best set ever. So the craziest thing that has ever happened in the DJ booth is the feeling I get!
Complete these sentences:
I’ll never forget the time I ____
I got two turntables and a mixer for Christmas. I never thought it would change my life forever.
I hope to someday forget about the time I ___
I always forget. Confused? Me too.
