Beatport Live presents Shapeshifter
22 September, 2011 | 9.20AMLast week, New Zealand’s Shapeshifter materialized in Beatport’s Berlin offices and proceeded to mix up an absolutely mental blend of bass, electro, jungle, and more—the kind of set we don’t see enough of, frankly.
If you missed it, fear not—the full two-hour session has been archived; click here to check it out, or just click “continue reading” to watch now. While you’re at it, check out a brief interview with the group below, along with their latest Beatport Top 10.
Thanks for stopping by Beatport to play for us! What’s it like to play in the Beatport booth, and have you done other live Internet mixes like this?
Kein Problem! It’s always fun to have a jam. It was a lot of fun to play in the Beatport booth, although I think the new, bigger booth will be better! Great atmosphere, however, lots of dancing space still on the other side of the decks, haha. We have done a few before, live on the internet, but none with the video as well.
Could you tell us a little about your track selection today? How did you pick out tracks for the mix, and what tunes are you particularly feeling right now?
Our track selection was pretty all over the place on the mix, and that’s the way we like it, really. We listen to so many different styles of music that we very rarely stick to one genre for a whole set. We play stuff that we would want to hear if we were on the dancefloor, things that we may be pleasantly surprised by if we were going to see a DJ play out. Playing on radio/internet gives you a little more freedom because you don’t have to hold a dancefloor. You can get away with some more freaky selections for listening’s sake.
Are there any upfront, unreleased tracks you played that we should be keeping our eyes open for?
There were a couple of new tracks we played from Camo and Krooked’s new LP, coming out soon on Hospital. We got the promos last week and the album is HUGE. They have really stepped it up, which is saying a lot considering their very high production standards to date. Also keep an eye out for Crushington and their evil alter egos The Upbeats. Full bad-man tings gwan!
What’s your DJ setup like?
Paora uses Itch with a Numark controller, and I use Serato with vinyl control. We will be introducing more live elements into our DJ sets soon, with the likes of Maschine opening up some very interesting possibilities.
For listeners who want to check you out in person, could you tell us about any DJ appearances you may have coming up, and where the band will be touring next?
That was the last of our DJ appearances in Europe for this year; Shapeshifter are heading into a live tour this week, from Amsterdam to Bratislava and a few places in between! Check out shapeshifterlive.com or our Facebook for more details.
