Wanna Battle? Japan’s top MCs set for clash
28 December, 2007 | 9.37AM- Section: Music News
Non-English hip hop is probably the most difficult music to export overseas.
That’s why there are not many Japanese MCs who are known outside of Japan, except for Scha Dara Parr (who once were featured on De La Soul’s ‘Buhloone Mind State’), Muro (ex. Microphone Pager, who is also known as the “king of diggin’"), and Rino and Twigy (who have featured on some of the DJ Krush’s releases).
However, Japanese rap has advanced a great deal in the past few years.
One of the events that signifies its growth is Ultimate MC Battle (UMB).
Arguably the best freestyler in Japan, MC Kan (of MSC) started this event at a small venue in Shinjuku in 2005, and it has grown into a nationwide, and highly acclaimed MC battle in Japan.
Heats
The local preliminary heats begun in February 2007.
From Hokkaido to Okinawa, a total of 869 MCs participated throughout the year, and only 16 have survived the battle as it reaches the final round.
This final battle, The Grand Championship, is sure to be a tough one, and will take place tomorrow night (Saturday 29th December) at Club Citta in Kawasaki city.
Some of the potential winners include: the Tokyo representative Bes (of Swanky Swipe), Mito’s Gocci (of Lunch Time Speax), and Osaka-based MC Hidaddy (of Infumiaikumiai).
Beatportal will be at the Grand Championship, so check back next week for a full report.
