Voting begins for Top 100 DJs Poll 2008, we have the results

Despite a lack of security measures and cheating scandals DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs Poll is still used as a benchmark by many DJ agents as a way to gauge how much they should charge club owners for their client’s services.

This is especially true outside of Europe where there is something of an information asymmetry - club owners and promoters outside of Europe have little access or knowledge about which DJs will pull in clubbers so are forced to believe every word of the agent’s.

Indeed many club promoters market their night with a Top 100 DJ based solely around their placement in that year’s poll.

I remember an emphatic MC in Egypt once declare proudly, “Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome the third best DJ in the world!” before Armin Van Buuren stepped up to the decks.

His choice of words didn’t hamper the enthusiasm of the crowd, but it was quite amusing.

Voting starts for the Top 100 DJs Poll 2008 in a little over 13 hours and it’ll be interesting to see what security measures (or lack of) are in place this year.

With so many DJs, DJ agents and promoters’ 2009 finances based on the results, the magazine has a moral responsibility to try to impose some restrictions to its online open vote system.

But even if there is tight security, the poll still suffers from thousands of obsessive DJs self-marketing the hell out of it.

How many “Vote for me, I’m a great DJ I promise” emails will be sent out this year?

Enough to put off most electronic music fans from voting in the first place.

And this year the self-obsessed DJs are going to be everywhere and be annoying carbon copies - DJ Mag have even created a ‘Vote For Me’ kit that includes “the marketing tools for any DJ to create their own Vote for Me pack”, which encompasses an E Flyer, a Banner ad, and a Myspace sticker.

Whopee.
