Vol.6

Vol.6

George Kagais [Mezzotinto]

Greek producer George Kagais [a] steps out from behind the shadow of his R.T.A. [a] guise here, for a debut release on Mezzotinto [l].

Under the aforementioned monicker, Kagais has had a solid pair of outings for Plastic City and Blue Bass Records this year, displaying a capable range of moods and textures within the general House music genre.

‘Vol.6’ is the sound of a producer moving up a notch or two, which is fitting considering Mezzotinto’s steady ascent since 2005.

The praise for this EP should mainly be reserved for ‘The Beginning’, which is a typically southeastern European take on the scene, meaning tension and drama in the melody and a percussive range that feels warmed by the sun.

This is not the track to slip on if you’re looking to take the roof off, although the urgent keys and tidy Detroit-esque strings leaves you with a dance floor weapon that would certainly pack a punch.

‘Demo Of August’ is the story of a tug-of-war between a kick drum and a bassline.

You fully expect the former to go on its usual four-four romp but it frustratingly never happens.

What’s left is something none to dissimilar to the A-side in terms of content, but with the entire dance floor prowess sucked out of it for the above reason.
