Video: The six-second break that shaped the world
5 March, 2009 | 5.12AMIn this fascinating 20 minute video, Nate Harrison narrates the history of the ‘Amen Break’, an obscure six-second drum sample for the b-side of a chart topping single from 1969.
In the video, Nate argues that this little known break became the basis for all drum & bass and jungle, and it was sampled extensively in early hip hop. In other words, these six seconds shaped the modern music world as we know it.
This 2004 video might very well be the poster child for sample culture, a powerful argument for the leniency of copyright ownership.
