Video: Freeland ‘Under Control’

Adam Freeland [a] has always been a free thinker. From his debut artist album ‘Now & Then’ back in 2003, the lyrics in his productions have carried a motif of political dissent and a distrust of capitalism, appropriately set against rock tinged breakbeats.

So I’m very happy to learn that, despite a few more years under his belt and a move to Los Angeles, plus a transformation from solo breakbeat producer to producing a full electronica band, his punk rock rebel tendencies are still as strong as ever as proven by this new single ‘Under Control’.

‘Under Control’ is the first single from Freeland’s forthcoming album ‘Cope’, appropriately being released this year on his own Marine Parade [l] label rather than a corporate-controlled major.

The recording of ‘Cope’ fulfilled Adam’s vision of a rock-infused cast of electronica-loving artists including Tommy Lee of Motely Crue on drums, as well as guest vocals from Joey Santiago of the Pixies, Brody Dalle of the Spinnerettes, and even Jerry Casale of DEVO.

But since it would be hard to imagine this impressive, yet surely over-obligated cast of characters touring together regularly, this album will be toured as a live band featuring the lead vocals and guitar talents of Kurt Baumann, with Hayden Scott (aka Pop Levi) on drum duty, and of course Adam the man himself handling keyboards/synths, samples, and vocals as well.

I was fortunate enough to see their debut performance at this year’s South By Southwest festival in Austin (known to the rock industry as THE place to discover the next hot band), and I can testify that these boys deliver what they promise: a truly rocking show that will get your feet moving and your hands in the air.

The video for ‘Under Control’ pretty much nails the overall feeling of the crowd that night, and what you can expect to experience yourself.

The James Murphy styled vocals a la ‘North American Scum’ remind us to “Relax, cuz nothing is under control”. Ahhhh… total anarchistic freedom.

Time to lose yourself in the beats and express your frustrations and joy all in one pulsating throbbing mass on the dancefloor, just like we’re used to do, but this time there are devils horns on both hands way up in the air.
