Valencia’s club Barraca celebrate 43 years

The popularity of a club is generally subject to generational factors, but club Barraca in Valencia, Spain, has proven it’s possible to keep dancing for 43 years, and like a fine wine get better with age.

Made famous during the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, Barraca was tied to Spain’s new found freedom in the post-Franco era, and in the last four years the club has had a dramatic overhaul to become one of Spain’s best electronic music clubs.

American DJ Andrew Grant, resident of Ibiza’s infamous DC10 club and part of the Picnic Group who took over management of the venue four years ago, explained Barraca’s rich history with dancing.

“Kids from Madrid, Barcelona and Malaga used to drive to Valencia to party the entire weekend at Barraca,” said Grant, who helped to organise the club’s 43rd birthday.

“That voyage or viaje was known as ‘Route de Bakalo’ which is a popular fish from these parts of Spain. The Route de Bakalo went on for about 12 yrs until ‘98 or ‘99, and then when we took over we changed the face of the club and brought a new international flavour.”

That international flavour was evident in the line-up for the club’s 43th anniversary bash - Ricardo Villalobos, Laurent Garnier, Zip and Nacho Marco all played at the club, DJs who were picked through a distinctly democratic process.

“We asked our newsletter base who they would like to play and they decided the line-up, just like how they chose to have Loco Dice play for New Year’s Eve.

“Club Barraca is just about good music without borders, nothing more,” Grant said of the club which can hold anything from 1000 - 4000 people. “The residents and local producers have shown Valencia to be a hotbed for dance music and we like to consider ourselves the Berlin of Spain.

“Mike Shannon once called the city his home, and Monoblock, Nacho Marco, Lontano, Los Updates and myself currently live here.”
