Breakage [Digital Soundboy Recordin...

This year has definitely been a ‘feeeeeling good’ one; what with Johnny D [a] taking the Nina Simone track and turning it into a massive minimal anthem, and Dutch d&b duo CLS [a] and Wax [a] rinsing their liquid homage to the soul legend later on in the summer.

Nina now gets the dubstep treatment, courtesy of Breakage [a] (what old Simone would have made of it, no one will ever know).

Breakage joins the ranks of a long line of drum & bass artists trying their hand at dubstep, but manages to stand out from the rest of the pack by adding something a little bit different.

Most d&b producers think that making dubstep is all about slowing the tempo down to around 140, and piling on as much bass as possible, whereas Breakage [a] recognises that intricacies and atmospherics are more important.

His previous productions such as the mighty genre-spanning ‘Clarendon’ and the heavy remix of Benga & Coki’s ‘Night’ on Tempa [l] have shown both the drum & bass and dubstep communities that he can be credible and individualistic in both categories.

With or without the Nina Simone hook, the layered production of the track is powerful; it’s a low-fi, deep, snare-driven cut that’s bound to turn heads.
