20 November, 2008 | 12.49PMThis year has definitely been a ‘feeeeeling good’ one; what with Johnny D
taking the Nina Simone track and turning it into a massive minimal anthem, and Dutch d&b duo CLS
and Wax
rinsing their liquid homage to the soul legend later on in the summer.
Nina now gets the dubstep treatment, courtesy of Breakage
(what old Simone would have made of it, no one will ever know).
Breakage joins the ranks of a long line of drum & bass artists trying their hand at dubstep, but manages to stand out from the rest of the pack by adding something a little bit different.
Most d&b producers think that making dubstep is all about slowing the tempo down to around 140, and piling on as much bass as possible, whereas Breakage
recognises that intricacies and atmospherics are more important.
His previous productions such as the mighty genre-spanning ‘Clarendon’ and the heavy remix of Benga & Coki’s ‘Night’ on Tempa
have shown both the drum & bass and dubstep communities that he can be credible and individualistic in both categories.
With or without the Nina Simone hook, the layered production of the track is powerful; it’s a low-fi, deep, snare-driven cut that’s bound to turn heads.
