Tsuba Meets Bearweasel
Tsuba Meets Bearweasel
20 May, 2008 | 11.20AMBearweasel
have created quite a stir off the back of just one single, last year’s ‘Rouen’ EP, and a handful of remixes.
Tsuba
was quick off the mark and immediately snapped up the duo’s 2nd release, the ‘Indian Runner EP’, three tracks of deep and dubby house music excellence with a stunning remix from Plasmik
.
Reactions from clubland have been nothing short of amazing with the likes of Jimpster, Martin Landsky, Laurent Garnier, Sebo K, Federico Molinari, Jamie Jones, Johnny D and Quarion all singing the duo’s praises.
Tsuba boss Kevin Griffiths got the lowdown on Bearweasel from Dean and Lou:
What’s behind the name?
LOU: Dean called me Laweasel once when he was drunk instead of Louisa and the nickname Weasel stuck! Dean looks / sometimes acts like a grisly bear!
DEAN: Sad, but true....
Sum up the sound of Bearweasel
DEAN: When we started we really didn’t want a “sound” as such, or at least to be too restricted.
I’ve been a warmup dj for years, so I have a passion for deeper grooves but when I’m playing peak time obviously things are different.
I wanted to make house music of all vibes, really (and some techno!)....
We are developing some running themes though.
LOU: Deep and dubby with Basic Channel-esque sounds and chord influences layered over mixed drum sounds pretty much sums it up… Oh, and horns!
What artists and labels are doing it for you right now?
DEAN: I’ve been really impressed by Musique Risquee in the past few years - some really inspirational stuff.
Akufen has been hammering the Tsuba release and he dropped us a line recently so we’d LOVE to do something for them in future, too.
I have to give my Hairy Claw
label a mention here, as well :)
LOU: Tsuba, Supernature, Cadenza, Mountain People, 8-Bit, Freerange and Rekids
What’s next for Bearweasel?
LOU: A nice holiday on a beach would be nice.
DEAN: Well, we do have Sonar!
Music-wise we have a follow up for Supernature, an ep for Murmur, a remix for Supernature and then hopefully a release on Hairy Claw.
After that, who knows? We’ve over-committed so much this year we’re going to take things as they come.
Favourite colour and fonts?
LOU: Purple or Mustard
DEAN: I’m still looking, you know?
Luca from Audiofly seems to have tried to outdo me on this very site with some turquoise numbers, so I’m going to raise my game.
I’m looking for someone reminiscent of Indian restaurant wallpaper - then I’ll die a happy man…
What’s your dream menu for dinner?
DEAN: Talk about an impossible question!
Right now, cream of asparagus soup (in season, amazing!), rack of lamb on pomme puree and a bottle of Barolo!
LOU: Dean’s roast dinner followed by my mum’s chocolate bread and butter pudding.
