Arty on the new sound of trance

It’s a sad fact that trance music faces a lot more criticism than other genres. It seems that trance fans are always having to defend their music against charges of being unimaginative, or stuck in the past.

Largely viewed as a “gateway” genre for people who first start liking dance music before their tastes expand and grow, it’s dismissed by the larger EDM community; but the majority of trance lovers have been fans for years. Trance gigs sell out fast and are always packed out – proof that the scene has a huge loyal following.

When non-trance fans think of the genre they usually think Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto, and Paul van Dyk. (Sorry, Paul: whatever your protests, you still are predominantly a trance DJ.) But a new wave of trance artists is proving that trance music can be fresh and exciting, with far more to offer than just predictable breakdowns and cheesy vocals.

The likes of Arty, Mat Zo and Ashley Wallbridge are currently exploring and defining a more sophisticated, innovative sound (and we’re not talking about “trouse"). Progressive, techy and electro-inspired, it’s more about basslines and less about the vocals. When we asked Arty to describe his sound, like most producers he didn’t want to be pigeon-holed, saying it isn’t trance or house but a different style of music all together.

“Originally I started off making soft progressive house music for radio shows,” he says. “But as I started touring as a DJ, I realized that people need to dance, which changed my style of music. It became more dancefloor-friendly. I always try to be different and I like to incorporate different genres into each record I make. It’s hard to define, though; I can’t describe my sound in one word.

“I’ve started thinking about my debut artist album, which I hope to start working on next year. It won’t only be trance or house; there’ll be so many different genres. I know what type of tracks I want, and they’ll range from 80bpm to 160bpm.”

If you can’t wait until the album’s released and want some examples of what we’re talking about, here are some key tracks to give you an idea of the new sound in trance music.

Arty, “Around the World” [Anjunabeats]

Mat Zo, “Superman” [Anjunabeats]
