Track Of The Day: Roxy Music - Love Is The Drug (Todd Terje Disco Dub)
8 February, 2012 | 4.55AMYou probably didn’t see this one coming: the Norwegian nu-disco dons Todd Terje, Lindstrom, and Prins Thomas have taken on two Roxy Music classics. Usually, edits of tunes this hallowed are resigned to the bootleg bin, but this is a legit release courtesy Virgin UK, making us feel like we should send fresh flowers to someone in the A&R department over there, in a show of appreciation. (It can’t hurt that Bryan Ferry has a well-documented love of dance music, of course.)

Todd Terje’s mix of “Love Is The Drug” is a dubbed-out masterpiece of brass-tacks disco-funk. It’s as dirty as you could hope for, with gravelly electric bass and chunky percussion; Terje goes to town on the vocals, whipping them through dub delay, nicely offsetting their familiarity with a bit of mixing-desk voodoo.
Lindstrom and Prins Thomas play it spacier—and more sedate—with their 70-BPM meditation on “Avalon,” fogging up the windows with soft, meandering guitar licks somewhere between Manuel Göttsching and Daniele Baldelli.
