Track Of The Day: Krystal Klear & Olivier Day Soul - Never Thought You Would Go
22 February, 2012 | 1.01AMPoor old R&B. I can’t help but feel that it gets more of a raw deal than it deserves sometimes. Hip hop continues to be wary of it (who can forget the oft-quoted Wu-Tang lyric “R n’ B, rap and bullsh*t, ya know what I’m sayin’?"); pop charts favor its shiniest, least substantial stars; and many people who claim to be longtime fans (myself included) can’t seem to move past the New Jack Swing and Nu Soul glory days of the 1980s and ‘90s. But that’s not to say that there’s nothing to look towards on the modern R&B landscape, as there are a number of contemporary artists who are committed to taking the genre in new directions.
Frank Ocean and The Internet have created a soulful offshoot from the brattier core of the Odd Future family, and Canadian artists Drake and The Weeknd have constructed authentic, flawed, and compelling personas with each of their subsequent releases. London imprint Eglo Records, run by the brilliant Floating Points and Alexander Nut, has explored many shades of soulful music since its inception, from FP’s own astral productions to the gorgeous output of vocalist Fatima.
This week they’ve released one of the finest R&B songs I’ve heard in years, ”Never Thought You Would Go,” by Irish beatmaker Krystal Klear and American vocalist Olivier Day Soul. More than any of the aforementioned artists, “Never Thought You Would Go” is unashamedly nostalgic, with vintage harmonies and an old-school slow-jam feel, but it has a sparkling, modern arrangement. It also has a beautifully simple video, which has been a YouTube favorite of mine for several weeks, and can be seen in full below.
