‘Touched The Sky’ was a beauty, now it’s time for the remixes.
The ‘Quentin Harris Vocal Mix’ is a dark, progressive style beast, which eschews the usual associations with the title of the remix.
It is really all about the urgency and orchestral crescendos that Harris brings us to, all the while being underpinned by a driving, forceful, bottom-end.
A metallic snare and hi-hat combination, juxtaposes refreshingly against the live-sounding instrumentation. Stirring stuff.
The ‘Quentin Harris Dub’ is in a dissimilar vein to the ‘Vocal’, treading a more tribal, European path.
The vocals are reduced and slur away amongst the more complete snatches of the original lines.
The only downside is that at one point things move far too close to the commercial Euro territory, with the synth lines in particular being guilty.
The ‘Yass Remix’ is more groove-based, but still opts for a driving, progressive feel in the way the ‘Vocal’ did.
The versions are similar but the levels of drama, and anticipation are never quite matched.
Yass plumbs for full use of the vocal and throws a break in towards the end for good measure.
Pick of the bunch? The Harris Vocal mix.
It deserves a mention for its movie soundtrack style soundscape and a step away from his usually associated soulful house sound.
