Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs are totally enormous

I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t be happier about the return of a spot of melody and fun in underground dance music. Maybe it’s a spring-and-summer thing, but the recent success of cuts like Lusine’s Nic Fanciulli mix charted highly and is starting to turn up on a slew of mix CDs) suggests I’m not alone.

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs is the alias of one Orlando Dinosaur (presumably not his real surname), the son of an Oxford University music professor, and his new EP for Greco-Roman is as cheerful as you could hope for. ‘Garden’ is a gorgeous, sing-song house miniature featuring boy girl vocals (Dinosaur himself plus Luisa from Lulu and the Lampshades), twinkling keyboards and stonking, 2-steppy bass and drums. It reminds me a little of ‘Around the House’ -era Herbert as refracted through the prism of UK garage. If I don’t hear this played outdoors at least once before September, my summer is officially ruined.

Check out that track and more after the jump.

‘Garden’

The rest of the EP shows that Mr. Jurassic Park happens to have a talent for adaptation on his side. ‘Blood Pressure’, featuring Riko, is a breakbeat-powered, dancehall-flavored track that reminds me a little of old El-B mixed up with old DJ Zinc [a]. ‘That One’ is a gorgeous house tune, remarkably tough but also refreshingly naïve, and ‘Dipper’ brings back old-school rave stabs over a shimmering minimal groove.

The results are, simply put, totally enormous.
