Toronto: Circa takes on mighty Guvernment

There are many reasons to hate Toronto.

Be it the frigid winters, scorching summer, crappy subway system or the lack of a winning sports team.

But, for all the things wrong with the city, the music scene has been thriving for as long as anyone can remember.

The Toronto dance music scene has matured over the years and developed into something to rival any of the worldwide clubbing destinations.

A talented pool of local DJs and producers (MSTRKRFT, Deadmau5 [check out his tunes in the player below], Adam K), some awesome venues, a mass of fans and a constant influx of international talent has secured Toronto as one of North America’s bright spots.

In the coming months, I will bring you all the latest news, reviews and interviews from in and around Toronto.

Guvernment

Of all the venues in Toronto, the Guvernment complex is the most famous and instantly recognizable to dance music fans.

Opened in 1996, the club features nine different rooms and state of the art sound and visuals.

The main room recently underwent a $2m renovation, features a new LED wall and hydraulic DJ booth.

The Guvernment has consistently brought in talent from around the world, and recently won Club of the Year (again) at the Toronto Nightclub Awards.

It’s the undisputed king of clubs in Toronto.

Circa

But now a challenger has arrived.

Circa recently opened its doors after more than two years of construction, legal battles, and other delays.

Peter Gatien, formerly of New York’s infamous Tunnel and Limelight, has been the architect of this $6m four-floor monster of a club.

There are interactive art installations, an escalator, several different rooms and bucket loads of lights and speakers.

Rumors are now flying that the two clubs are in a booking war, trying to snap up the best talent.

So far the Guvernment has continued to bring in big acts while Circa has been slow to make a splash.

Round one has gone to the Guvernment, but only time will tell if Circa will steal the crown from Toronto’s king of clubs.
