Top Track: Johnny D ‘Orbitalife’
21 March, 2008 | 1.35AM- Section: Music News Topics: DJ Gossip, Miami WMC 2008
Beatportal has been bigging up 28-year-old tech house newcomer Johnny D for the last six months, but with his new EP ‘Orbitalife’ on Oslo he surpasses all expectations.
‘Orbitalife’ doesn’t feel like it was made by a rookie producer, but rather it sounds like it was made by an established master of the studio, operating at the peak of his career.
I haven’t heard a single record more exciting than ‘Orbitalife’ this year. Mark my words, Johnny D will be a star because of it.
The beauty of ‘Orbitalife’ is in the organic nature of the record. It flows from minimal to deep house to house effortlessly.
The groove is wonderfully different and quite like any house or techno track around at the moment. There are bongos and sexy vocals, chords and build ups. It’s a journey that unfolds at a wonderful rate.
My focus for the last few weeks has been on uncovering tracks that I think will be big at Miami’s WMC 2008, but Johnny D’s ‘Orbitalife’ is so inspiring and innovative that I fear it won’t get played much at WMC.
That’s why I said ‘Orbitalife’ is a ‘Top Track’ rather than a ‘WMC Track’ - the reason is because it’s not an obvious dancefloor slayer. It’s a 12 minute bomb of evolution.
But by the time Circoloco starts in Ibiza’s DC10 this summer, you can bet that every house and techno DJ will be playing Johnny D’s ‘Orbitalife’.
