Top Track: Kevin Saunderson feat. Inner City ‘Big Fun’ (Simian Mobile Disco Remix)
30 January, 2008 | 1.38PMInner City’s ‘Big Fun’ was a worldwide smash hit when it was released in 1988, courtesy of Kevin Saunderson’s perfect techno synths and beats.
The track represented the successful collision of two of electronic music’s foremost movements - Detroit techno and Chicago house.
Kevin Saunderson
brought techno’s tightly constructed basslines and drum loops to the table, whilst Paris Grey (a Chicago house music vocalist) gave the track a warm, soulful edge.
It also made it radio-friendly, and as such became a huge hit.
Now British duo Simian Mobile Disco
have remixed the track, and it’s the most exciting remix we’ve heard in a long time.
Interestingly, ‘Big Fun’ might never have seen the light of day had it not been for English A&R man Neil Rushton, who discovered the master tape for ‘Big Fun’ whilst scouting out potential tracks for Virgin Records’ influential compilation ‘Techno - The New Dance Sound Of Detroit’ (1988).
After that compilation blew up, ‘Big Fun’ was released as a single.
Simian Mobile Disco’s version is groovy electronic house, but it still retains the wonder of the original, vocals n all.
When the breakdown comes with its memorable synth riff, you’re taken right back to the old days, albeit in a shiny new, hybrid production model.
This is the first big remix of 2008, methinks.
