Top Track: Cirez D ‘The Journey / Stockholm Marathon’

aka Eric Prydz
shows his respect for old house music with his latest release ‘Stockholm Marathon / The Journey’ which features two tracks of clever, dancefloor destroying tech house full of old house samples.
By dropping scratch samples and vocal snippets—the basis of many a hip-hop and house track—into the mix, Prydz has managed to create a classic vibe, whilst at the same time delivering a refreshing groove thanks to his supreme level of production, sound quality and quirky FX.
On ‘The Journey’ a male vocal repeats over an over something that sounds like ‘This is a journey, this is a journey’ whilst scratch samples are dropped in occasionally as Prydz douses the track with his white noise cannon.
The reaction on the dancefloor when ‘The Journey’ drops will be nothing short of ecstatic.
‘Stockholm Marathon’ is a more laid-back affair, and is based around a synth loop that Cirez D slowly releases in the breakdown - it’s simple yet effective.
There are very few producers in electronic music that are able to create quality underground cuts for the heads like this, as well as chart destroying pop-centric beats like a Pink Floyd remix or Prydz’ ‘Call On Me’.
Some may argue that making tracks like ‘Call On Me’ ruins Eric Prydz credibility, but on the contrary I think it shows that he’s a producer of many talents.
Why can’t a producer do both underground and commercial with pride?
