The loop-splicing, disco-destroying specialist goes digital with his excellent series of Soundhack releases.
If you’re a true techno nerd and you’ve ever visited Berlin, you’ll have already made an instant B-line to Hard Wax.
There, up the back-breaking four flights of stairs and nestled inside one of the world’s most revered record shops, Frank Timm has spent the last few years obsessing over underground music.
There are few better preparations for making house or techno than studying its output day by day, hour by hour in a hallowed environment like Hard Wax’s.
Soundhack and Soundstream--- Frank’s alter ego production aliases—are testament to this, and both have been responsible for a series of highly collectible and much sought after vinyl-only releases distributed by the Hardwax label.
As one part of Smith ’n’ Hack, Frank’s made a name for himself as an expert remixer best known for their rehash of Matthew Herbert’s ‘Movin Like a Train’.
Now, though, Frank Timm’s records have finally found their way onto Beatport.
‘Soundack #2’ is the next installment in his series of records to be given a digital download outlet.
Whereas Soundstream caters for his disco sampling projects, the self-titled Soundhack label is dedicated to releasing only Frank’s Soundhack alias releases.
Each one of these is based around chopped and sliced samples, tastefully carved into relentless party-starting grooves and loops.
All four tracks on this release are finely honed DJ tools capable of tearing up house-flavoured dancefloors.
C1 and C2 ply more “out there” territory of the like, favoured by wonky house specialists like Alter Ego.
D1 and D2 take more disco-flavoured routes, rinsing as much possible funk out of a basic set of samples.
All four may be minimal in aesthetic, but are anything but in their application.
If you’re a DJ in search of loops and grooves to chop in and out of your other records you’ll find these indispensable, or if you’re simply an underground fan addicted to loops, prepare to score your next fix.
