Top label: Mojuba
Top label: Mojuba
16 September, 2008 | 6.04AMLooking back, 2005 was a good year for house music.
Why?
Dixon started Innervisions as his own offshoot in the Sonar Kollektiv family, releasing Ame’s now classic ‘Rej’, Carl Craig remixed Theo Parrish’s ‘Falling Up’, and Don Williams started Mojuba

There have always been labels where every record became a collector’s item - an artifact of sorts, thanks to limited pressings, special hand-numbered and hand-stamped sleeves, and amazing music of course.
Like Sähkö Recordings, B12 or A.R.T. to name a few from the top of my head.
Berlin’s Mojuba is one of those labels. With a clear sonic (house) and visual (a stamped white label with a fabric application) vision, every record released on it has had this special aura of scarcity and timelessness.
Fueled by the passion for deep US house music Don Williams started Mojuba in July 2005, a time, where minimal was dominating the danceloors worldwide.
Going back to the sound of classic labels like Prescription, Balance or KMS, producers like Sven Weisemann, Nick Solé and Oracy returned with house tracks, which were as deep and organic as they were fresh and utterly amazing - transcribing the classic early to mid-nineties house sound to 2005 by adding their own little twist.
Tracks like Oracy’s ‘Family Day’ or Sven Weisemanns ‘Let’s Swing’ approached minimalism in a rather old school way - stripping down the tracks to their raw and core elements: chords, clever drum programming and only little effects.
Originators like Chez Damier are big Mojuba fans (by the way, Chez Damier is going to play one of his rare DJ-gigs on September 26th on a Mojuba party at Panoramabar in Berlin).
While they proceed to release only strictly limited quantities of vinyl, all releases are available digitally now. Which is lucky for those who want to check them out, since most of Mojuba vinyl goes for quite some money.
As the etching on Mojuba 001 said: “… for more nodding headz!”
