Tokyo’s Club Yellow ends its 16 year history in June

Another shocking and extremely sad news hit Tokyo on Friday, February 1.

Space Lab Yellow, the city’s one of the longest running dance clubs and the world’s top DJs’ most favoured spot, has officially announced it’s closing in June 2008.

The place, widely called as ‘Club Yellow’ or just ‘Yellow,’ opened in Nishi-Azabu, Tokyo in ‘91, and they just had huge parties last December, one with David Morales and Frankie Knuckles, to celebrate the 16th anniversary of the club and also the 20th anniversary of Def Mix together, and another one with Moodymann.

Regardless of its rather small capacity of approx. 800, Yellow has been hosting the nights with the world’s A-List DJs and artists. From Francois K to DJ Premier, Laurent Garnier to Mad Professor, Chicks On Speed to Joe Claussell, Lee Perry to Carl Cox… and it has been the most established, quality club in town throughout its history.

The reason behind this decision, according to the spokesperson, is the demolition of the building it’s located in. It is unknown whether they would open again in another location in the future.

Many of us here in Tokyo is still not recovered from the shock from the Cisco Records’ closing, and now, the main club in the city is about to disappear.... we are going through the time of some radical change for sure.

The closing parties are scheduled to take place on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 of June.

We have about five more months. Make sure you don’t miss this last opportunity to experience the Tokyo’s best.
