Tokyo Shanghai
Shlomi Aber [Ovum]
19 May, 2008 | 9.04AMThe fresh faced don of the Isreali techno renaissance delivers another surefire dancefloor firestarter.
It’s all happening for Israel’s 26 year-old techno breakthrough.
After scoring a mighty club hit with last year’s excellent ‘Freakside’, Shlomi Aber’s since established himself as a DJ to be reckoned with, as well as dropping cut throat dancefloor workouts like this.
His essential mix for Radio 1 is proof and features ‘Tokyo Shanghai’ as one of the jewels in its crown.
The track itself is pretty simple, with a hook that’s a squelchy out-of-key loop that bounces through the track, carried along by barrow loads of funk.
As a club tool it’s been smashing dancefloors everywhere and Josh Wink’s force as a guiding influence for the Israeli’s under his wing is very apparent.
Like his other Ovum labelmate Gel Abril, ‘Tokyo Shanghai’ and its B-side, the acid monster, ‘Quivery’, both feature the Wink capacity for tight, tense breakdowns perfectly maximised to create the biggest impact when the beats and bass finally drop.
That’s by no means a criticism.
As A&R for the label it’s only natural that Wink will sign tracks that tie in with his own ideals of what club music should be about. And as one of the godfathers of modern house and techno it’s only expected that new producers like Shlomi Aber
and Gel might follow in his stylistic footpath.
Both tracks are an indication that Shlomi Aber
is going to be one of techno’s mightiest talents if he can keep building on releases like these.
Already his own label Be As One is throwing up some of the best tracks around thanks to the tight network of new producers he counts on as friends in Israel.
With tracks like ‘Tokyo Shanghai’ incoming at such a high rate from the Israeli techno scene it must surely make it one of the world’s most cutting edge destinations for techno right now.
