Review: Club Air, Tokyo’s tech house

Last night, on 30th December 2008, Beatportal warmed up for the NYE celebrations in Tokyo by touching down in Air, one of Shibuya’s best clubs.

Check out our mini review, loaded with murky, neon-tinged club snaps and a track ID of a tech-house banger.

On the 31st December 2008 Sven Vath’s Cocoon takes over Womb, which is arguably the best club in the world, located in Shibuya.

And sneaky Sven has been charged with ensuring The Land of the Rising Sun rides into 2009 atop the crest of a raging 4 / 4 wave.

In the mean time, we checked out Air, to soak in the Tokyo vibes and give you an exotic report on all things Asian in the clubbing universe.

So, the night was called Eden, described on the flier as “2008 YEAR END BOM!!”.

Quite.

Guest DJ Aosawa kicked off proceedings, followed by Shotaro Maeda and Ryo Tsutsui.

Ryo absolutely rocked the spot, playing an uncompromising selection of fat, heavy tech house, punctuated by choppy drum breaks.

The club wasn’t at maximum capacity [people were obviously saving themselves for NYE] but there was a big crowd and everyone was relaxed and buzzing, because this period in Tokyo is a rare time when hardworking locals receive an official extended holiday.

In the club we chatted to Anthony, a Canadian tech-house fiend, who was reveling with his buddy Tetsuya who, as you can see by the T-shirt on the right, is a huge Boys Noize fan!

“We just couldn’t resist to come out tonight,” Anthony said. “I come from Vancouver, and I’m addicted to Tokyo. I’m into all kinds of music, I play the guitar - but I can’t say no to a bit of house and techno.”

“Yeah - I love electronic music,” Tetsuya added. “In Tokyo it’s huge, and the atmosphere at the events is great. Everyone’s always smiling and having a good time.”

As for the tune of the night?

Quite simply - ‘Diablo’ by Dubfire.

Already a classic, when DJ Shotaro Maeda dropped this bomb, it blew away pretty much everything else.

All in all, a satisfying work out for the Beatportal crew in the run up to NYE in Tokyo.
