Today Is Yesterday EP
Errel Ranson [Sula Muse]
12 September, 2007 | 12.50PMOver the past twenty odd years, London DJ/producer Paul Mac
has been many things to many people.
Paul Mac was an original acid house DJ and also worked under a dizzying array of pseudonyms to release a wide range of techno and house – from Herman Funker, Pablo Fudrucker or Jorge Zamacona – releasing everything from jazzy, broken beats to tearing loopy grooves.
Mac was also one of the few techno producers to put out a coherent artist album (see 2003’s excellent ‘Push Came to Shove’, if you’re interested).
Now it seems that Paul Mac is content to take the back seat and promote new talent through his recently established Sula Muse label.
Mac’s latest young blood is Errel Ranson (or is that another one of Mac’s pseudonyms?), who debuted last year on Arne Weinberg’s label.
Favoring an introspective approach, Ranson’s tracks are based on intricate percussion, offbeat rhythms and sick acid lines.
While he flirts with old school electro on ‘Sense of the Words’, the standout track is the rave whistle and tight claps of the old school ‘Today Is Yesterday’ – which brings us back to the place Paul Mac started at, nearly twenty years ago.
