Time Has Come EP

Pete Moss [Recline Records]

Recline Records [l] serves mainly as an outpost for label boss Pete Moss’s musical thoughts.

Although making guest appearances on imprints such as Ovum, Dessous and Plastic City, it has mainly been on home turf where the Philadelphia based producer has laid it down.

This latest EP contains a trio of no thrills, groove-based cuts that would be described most accurately as mid-set traffic for DJs driving in the US house lane.

The title track ‘Time Has Come’ most successfully straddles the fine line between repetition and boredom.

The scant note count is well played upon by multiple layers of sound, which are cleverly stacked to emphasize the feeling.

A tightly wound rhythm underpins ‘Step Back Jack’, which also opts for a groove basis but carries it off not nearly as effectively.

The two beat, vocal repeats sound uninspired, as the only real development is a melodic fill that weaves in from time to time.

‘So Sweet’ is solid but uninteresting and again shuns the temptation to introduce breakdowns or any real musical development.

There is no need for fireworks in every dance record, as the very genre is based upon repetition, but subtle variation is usually the key to this type of loop based sound.
