Tim Deluxe Interview
Tim Deluxe Interview
13 May, 2007 | 12.27AMBeatportal caught up with Tim Deluxe
, one of Britain’s biggest house producers, to chat about his first steps into electronic music and his new single ‘Let The Beats Roll’.
1. How did you first get into electronic music?
Through my brother. He had a pretty diverse record collection and when he used to go out I would sneak into his room and listen to his tunes.
We also have lots of pirate radio stations in London and they were also a huge part of my musical education.
2. Why did you decide to start making your own beats?
I didn’t decide to start making electronic music, I just wanted to make house music. I started in 1995, by just sampling lots of old soul/disco/jazz/funk records and putting house beats underneath.
My first releases came out on Cross Section Records.
3. Your new tune ‘Let The Beats Roll’ on Skint is blowing up big time. Why do you think it stands out?
It’s got hooks, simple as that. If a track doesn’t have a melodic hook then you are not gonna stand out, hence some of the dull minimal/tech house records around at the minute, that
a lot of people are fed up with.
4. How did you hook up with Simon Franks from the Audio Bullys?
Simon came over to my studio, and we were just hanging out checking out some tracks I have made.
I played him the backing track for ‘Let The Beats Roll’.
He said, “I’ve got an idea turn the mic on.” The next thing ‘Let The Beats Roll’ was born.
We spent an afternoon on it and by the end we had the vocals done and that was that.
It wasn’t planned and was totally spontaneous which is how it should be. When you don’t think about it, that’s when you get the best results.
I like the process of making music without thinking about it to much. You get yourself into a head space where it just happens, and your subconscious mind churns it out.
That’s the bit I like. You are free and innocent to express yourself 100%.
