Tiësto and house the highlights of 2007? You must be joking.
Tiësto and house the highlights of 2007? You must be joking.
11 December, 2007 | 5.39PMBillboard Magazine recently published an article claiming ”DJ Tiesto
and the return of house music were the highlights of the dance scene in 2007”.
It’s no wonder then, that the kids are listening to hip hop and rock.
Because, rather than attempt to understand or research the electronic music scene over the last 12 months, Billboard have just published the same article they’ve been publishing since 2001.
When articles like this get written about our scene, which suggest that nothing fresh or new has been created since trance or house, there are positive and negative outcomes.
The negative is that when you tell your mates that you like electronic music, they’ll probably go “What like that DJ Tiësto bloke, and house music?”
And then you’ll feel like a fool.
The good news is our scene will stay underground and free of bandwagon wannabes looking for a new trend to follow.
Of course, the highlights of 2007 are far from DJ Tiësto or the return of house.
There was the explosion of French touch for a start, with artists like Justice
, SebastiAn and Para One coming to the fold.
Daft Punk
too made a huge comeback and dominated the live music scene, especially in the US.
But then, Daft Punk isn’t ‘new’ some of you may point out.
Ok, well what about Dubstep, which too grew in popularity thanks to cutting-edge artists such as Burial and Kode 9.
Too obscure for you Billboard?
Well how about Deadmau5
[check out all his hits in the player below], Tiefschwarz, Dubfire, Boys Noize, MSTRKRFT and Claude VonStroke who all made a significant impact this year both in the clubs, and in the mainstream.
Samim - he should at least get a mention for causing a controversy over his ‘Heater’ track which quickly became a love/hate debate.
Then there’s the house and techno champions like Luciano
and Ricardo Villalobos
who bridged the gap between minimal and house in 2007, ushering in a new era of groovy tech house that embraces soul and disco, as well as machines and electronics.
Tons of exciting new sounds and beats came out of the minimal scene too.
It probably would be pointless mentioning the new wave of Romanian producers and DJs that are on the brink of breaking through - Rhadoo, Raresh and Petre Inspirescu - as Billboard would think they were types of curry.
So let’s sum up this year’s dance music by talking about Dutch trance and house.
Thank you Billboard we’ll be over here should you ever need a quote on classical music - 2007 was all about Beethoven, wasn’t it?
