Three of Us
Three of Us
Russ Gabriel [Thump Electroniks ]
19 May, 2008 | 3.03PMSix years is a long time in pop music, but in techno it’s an eternity.
That’s the length of time that UK producer Russ Gabriel
has been missing in action.
Gabriel’s last missive saw him throwing convoluted jazzy shapes on an album for Out of the Loop back in 2002.
Thankfully, he’s changed his direction since then.
This release and his first, official comeback release for Pariter don’t quite emulate the futuristic techno adventures he mapped out during the early to late 90s on his seminal Ferox imprint, but Gabriel is certainly back on form.
Lead track ‘Three of Us’ is a deep, hypnotic rush, centered on crashing Detroit snares and ethereal chords, copper-fastened to a pulsing, tone-shifting electronic rhythm, an unusual combination of raw humanity and machine-driven precision.
‘Congrilla’ is a more similar to the Pariter release, with Gabriel, like Sebo K, digging deep into his Lil’ Louis collection to create a gently soaring, spine-tingling housey build.
Completing the package is a rework of ‘Congrilla’ which makes references to the Ferox back catalogue, but is warmer and less spiky—drawing on the seductive ‘intelligent’ techno sound of mid 90s Warp.
