is born with ‘Cut the Line’ from New York’s Derek Marin, supplemented with a bevy of remixes from established names and upcoming talent.
Noah Pred and Evan Marc’s audio lovechild, Thoughtless Music, is born from the digital womb with ‘Cut the Line’ from New York’s Derek Marin
.
Following his releases on Surreal, Matter:/Form, and Intrinsic Design, raw grooves form the basis for a late-night juggernaut.
Reinterpretations of the original come from a host of established and upcoming artists, ranging from refined minimalism and emotive slow-burners to percussive electro and adventurous technical work-outs
We had a chance to ask Mr. Marin a few questions in advance of the release from his New York production bunker.
How long have you been producing for?
I stopped counting ‘cause it’s getting scary - over 15 years I think.
What inspires you to produce music?
It’s a bit of a cliché answer: everything.
But I guess the real answer is actually anger; when I’m frustrated or angry about something I head straight to my laptop.
Give in to your dark side!
What have been your career highlights?
DJing with Andrew Fletcher of Depeche Mode; the last time I spun in Colombia was magical; my first release on Plastic City - and this release is shaping up to be a nice highlight as well.
Can you describe an average day for Derek Marin?
Get up at about 1 or 2pm, eat my leftover pizza, get online.
Then spend the next few hours on a track or two before I wash up and walk over to work where I manage a restaurant - and eventually get drunk.
What’s your favorite thing about living in New York?
Food, food, food.
What was the inspiration behind ‘Cut the Line’?
There’s a lot of long lines in New York.
No, seriously - it was actually part of a series of tracks I produced in homage to my favorite candy.
How do you feel about so many artists reinterpreting and remixing your work?
Honored - this is a first for me.
‘Cut the Line’, featuring remixes from KiloWatts, Jeff Milligan, Noah Pred, Taho, and many others, is available now exclusively on Beatport. Turn off the lights, turn up the volume, and prepare to cut the line.
