This Is Fear Of Theydon

This Is Fear Of Theydon

Various Artists [Sunday Best Record...

Founder of one of the most prestigious indie labels in the UK, it’s perhaps fitting that, like Fear Of Theydon, label boss and Radio 1 DJ Rob Da Bank also began his career as a tea boy.

Proving that you should never underestimate the power of a good brew, Fear Of Theydon [a] (AKA Julian Peck), quickly recognized as a talent by Da Bank, is now demanding our attention like a burning beverage thrown in the lap.

His take on Grand National’s ‘Rub Your Potion’ creeps up on you in the guise of ambient electronica but transforms dramatically into something huge.

Warm synth pulses build up to breed percussive excitement, exploding into full-on hands in the air anthem out of nowhere.

The ‘Extra Whizz Extended Mix’ of Soft Spot could maybe have been done with a bit more Whizz to get to the same tempo as the other tracks on the EP as, although dreamy and sweet, it pales in comparison to its compadres.

The Mount Cherries who comprise of English, French and Asian art students from Central St. Martins, are the next to receive the Theydon treatment.

Guitar led electro break beat switches to big room electro, punctuated with a cool French vocal.

Hopefully the vocal doesn’t translate to something like “swing your pants, swing your pants, all hold hands and swing your pants”.

Last up, it’s a storming mix of Olympus Mons (who were winners of Fopp’s “Best Unsigned Band Award” – someone sign them up!!!) that is absolutely stunning.

Guitar led but still firmly electronic with programmed submarine style stabs that sound like something from a Cure record.

Perfectly married with some amazing upfront songwriting about the independence of youth, this is a standout track on an already top class EP.
