Third Stage EP

Various [RAM Records]

RAM EPs, now up to Ram Raiders III, were always guaranteed to be faultless.

So how does the latest one fair?

Mostly produced by Culture Shock, apart from the lead track which also features The Brookes Brothers, this is a tasty, well-produced slice of dance music.

Oh, but what’s this – a breaks track making up the D-Side?

‘Asteroids’ by Culture Shock is by far and away the best tune on this EP – a freaky mash of drum & bass influences in a 130BPM mould.

It is extremely significant for rave culture, as it shows that the tech-house sound currently dominating club culture is even filtering through to the claustrophobic world of d&b.

‘Asteroids’ has gnarly synths that cause teeth to grind on all but the cleanest of dancefloors, complete with chest-caving 4/4 kick/snare combos and pokey synths on the offbeat.

Anyone interested in dance music needs this in their collection.

What about the D&B tunes? The lead one is good, but not outstanding.

Nothing blows us away on ‘ReWork’, but it’s nevertheless very well produced and arranged.

The B side ‘Zeppelin’ is trippy and different to anything around currently, containing a lot of energy as well as some lucid cinematics and samples; it’s what d&b heads will be buying this EP for.
