These Eyes / Strictly Erotics

Danton Eeprom [Fondation Records]

Danton Eeprom [a], aka French producer Julian Brambiller, first came to the attention of many when he was included on Ewan Pearson’s excellent Sci.Fi.Hi.Fi mix for Soma, and since then has carved out his own uniquely beguiling strain of angular, quirky techno that references everything from Dopplereffekt to Kompakt, Adonis and Depeche Mode.

‘These Eyes’ is the sort of creepy, mangled sound that truly deserves the term electro-house – no OTT square waves here, just a wobbling old-school bass line, pinching 808 drums and a straight-line 4/4 kick holding it all down.

What makes it a bit special, though, is Eeprom’s wigged out vocal, recalling underrated Chicago legend Gemini at his demonically unhinged best.

Like all the best things in life, it’s a bit scary at first, but once you submit the dark side, you’ll be glad you did so.

‘Strictly Erotics’ is not quite as sexy as its title might suggest – moaning pads sigh over a vaguely de-tuned bass, while rat-a-tat drums loosely amble around a low-slung central groove.

Walking a weird line between deep techno and sicko-disco, it’s evidence of Danton Eeprom’s characteristically unpredictable style.

This guy is hotly tipped to break through into the techno big league this year, and we reckon he might just do it.
