The World Of A Man / Woman

Naughty [Mood Music Records]

Filippo Naughty Moscatello has been knocking around for a while now - his early releases on Gigolo helped set the tone for the label’s eventual creation and dominance of the electroclash scene. But unlike many of his contemporaries from that period, his muscular grooves tended to stay away from the style’s rock-ish excesses, focussing instead on high-octane, distinctively groovy club techno.

This debut release for the excellent Mood Music imprint sees him exploring his housier tendencies more openly than ever before, splitting the release between the surging power of ‘The World Of A Man’, and the driving melodic balearica of ‘The World Of A Woman’.

Evidently, each track is intended for specific settings.

The ‘Man’ track offers nefarious strobelight energy and an edgy, heads down feel, as old-school chimes stab succinctly over a single-note staccato bassline.

An ominously rumbling bassline anchors the acidic bleeps and clips, giving the track plenty of anthemic, big-room pomp.

It has to be said, though, that ‘The World Of A Woman’ is better still; a Nightcrawlers-style organ bassline slips sexily below layers of dewy-eyed melody, sounding not a million miles away from the harmonious instincts of Booka Shade at their dancefloor best.

It’s a sparkling return from a producer we’re glad to see back in action.
