The Waiting Room
The Waiting Room
Chloe [Kill The DJ]
4 December, 2007 | 1.11PMChloe’s low-key electro-ish minimal-ish thang has impressed those who like their techno with a touch of dark charm for a while now, but with ‘The Waiting Room’, she’s clearly decided to let her imagination run riot.
Bravely wide-reaching in its remit, it nonetheless feels totally cohesive — from menacing folky shimmers to echo-drenched warehouse minimal, she’s clearly immersed herself in a strangely beautiful universe of her own, with a numerous moments that are both genuinely moving, yet effortlessly cool-as-fuck.
‘Beneath The Ground’ works a loose, breaky rhythm around ominous pulses, offering something that’s organically satisfying and cybernetically unnerving; ‘Be Kind To Me’ is vast, orchestral techno that sounds like it’s keying into some deeply uncomfortable emotions; and ‘Suspended’ is the kind of pressure cooker dancefloor burner that puts many of her lame-ass male minimal counterparts to shame.
And that’s just the dancefloor stuff – the shivering acoustic slivers and gently enveloping ‘song’-type tracks equally suffused with power and feeling.
It’s an honest, emotive and engagingly excellent album from a highly talented artist.
