The Underground Bullshit / Papa Dee

Gel Abril [Ovum Recordings]

The Israeli minimal takeover continues with a newcomer Gel Abril release on Ovum Recordings.

With only three releases under his belt, it’s rare to find a new producer in techno with such a skill for making simple but expertly crafted records.

‘The Underground Bullshit’ is a tense techno wig out built around a moody bassline topped up by some eerie pads and an arpegiatting top end riff that takes the track on an altogether freakier plane.

It’s perfectly crafted for those dark and sinister moments of dancefloor messiness.

If summer 2007 was built around Ibiza-kissed tracks like the bootleg of St Germain’s ‘Rose Rouge’, then this is a perfect soundtrack to wintertime’s preferred dark, underground clubs.

‘Papa Dee’ is a little more reserved, tweaking a tense synth line in and out of effects laden percussion.

The release is another coup de grace for Josh Wink’s Ovum label which is proving to have one of techno’s most finely honed eyes for new talent.

And most tellingly of all, this EP is so good it doesn’t even need the usually obligatory Wink mix to make it one of their best releases of 2007.
