The sound of Miami WMC 2010?

The sound of Miami WMC 2010?

More than anything, Miami’s annual Winter Music Conference is about hot new club music. You can bet that every DJ and record label owner in Miami this week is touting a bag full of promos, having spent most of the winter planning their release schedules and summer sets around WMC.

Whilst the conference’s relevance as an industry b2b event has waned in recent years, as the focus has shifted towards a week of non stop partying, plenty of records are still dancefloor-tested and broken during WMC, giving Miami party goers the opportunity to hear dance hits before they go on to dominate the summer’s festivals and club events.

Crystal ball in hand, we called up a number of DJs, both big names and up and comers, to find out which records they think will be big during this year’s WMC. Then we also analysed Beatport’s DJ chart data - specifically the top charted tracks of March 2010 - to seek out the tracks that are being charted and played the most by DJs currently.

We hope that the following list of soon-to-be-released cuts, top charted tracks, and DJ favourites gives some indication of how Miami’s WMC will sound in 2010.

Adultnapper

Guillame & the Coutu Dumonts ‘Can’t Have Everything’ [Circus Company]

Not much more I can say about this track other than that it has got a real anthemic quality to it while retaining such a deep and underground feel. Dop on vocals mixed with Guillame’s eclectic and wonderfully weird drums and music, and you have a recipe for a dancefloor bomb.

Lil Tony ‘Checkpoint Charlie’ [Mood Music Records]

I am a huge fan of Lil Tony. His grooves are so incredibly tight and just dark enough to create the right balance of intensity on the dancefloor while still retaining a classic house feel. Brilliant.

Burnski ‘Me And You’ [Dessous Recordings]

There are very few tracks that set the dancefloor off bigger than this tune. Burnski has a really keen sense of drama in his music and this is a perfect example of it.

Soulclap

Soul Clap ‘Extravaganza’ [Wolf + Lamb Black]

Extravaganza is our latest and greatest edit/bootleg forthcoming on Wolf + Lamb Black. A guaranteed “ladies-report-to-the-dancefloor-for-booty-shake” anthem, this tune tells the story of the romance/heartbreak from a one night stand.

SECT ‘Man Of Wisdom’ [Culprit Records]

Straight-up hands in the air Nicolas Jaar style! This number due out on Culprit records is a sample heavy jazz bomb produced by Boston supergroup SECT (Sergio Santos, Eli Goldstein, Charlie Levine, and Tanner Ross).

Already getting great crowd reaction, ‘Man Of Wisdom’ is living proof that slow and sexy wins the race.

Soul Clap ‘Action/Satisfaction’ [Crosstown Rebels]

Written by Cnyce on a Virgin America flight ride from Boston to LA, ‘Action/Satisfaction’ is our first real vocal.

The singer laid these lyrics down through a pair of headphones way back in 2002 and we’ve been sitting on them ever since. The result is a dancefloor tested, 115 bpm classy deep house work out, and the A-Side of our forthcoming Crosstown Rebels EP.

Tell ‘em like it is playaz, “Got no time for talking, only Action/Satisfaction”.

Wally Lopez

Wally Lopez ‘Incredible Experience’ [Spinnin Deep]

This is my last single on the Dutch Spinnin label. I’m very excited to play it at all the WMC parties.

Patrick Mark ‘Wattura’ (Norman Zube Remix) [The Factoria]

Patrick and Norman have joined our main label, and this is an excellent release and a great remix. We’ve had a lot of great feedback, and it will be a big success at WMC for sure.

David Herrero ‘Sabana Hypnótica’ (Francisco Allendes Remix) [Formula Recs Digital]

This is the perfect opening track - I’ll be opening a lot of my sets with this. See you pool side!

Gadi Mizrahi (Wolf + Lamb/Double Standard)

Siopis ‘Really Love Ya’ [Get Physical Music]

This track is amazingly epic and deep. I don’t usually play music by this imprint, but this track goes to show you that you can’t sleep on any label.

The vocals sound like Seal, and push every right button for me. I think this one worked for me all winter and since I’ve been playing in colder climates, I’ve used tracks like this to substitute a lot of disco (which works better in the summer).

Joy Orbison ‘The Shrew Would Have Cushioned The Blow’ [Aus Music]

I know this one is an obvious one but it’s just that good. I guess the crossover genre appeal is what drives this one home the most, although I have to pitch it down all the way since I play at a much slower bpm.

Soul Clap ‘Extravaganza’ [Wolf + Lamb Black]

This edit by Soul Clap is insane. The boys wrote the track using vocals by actor/singer Jamie Fox. This weapon is being pressed as we speak, luckily I have the test pressing to set dancefloors on fire in Miami. The Soul Clap ‘R&B’ EP should be available in stores next month, but it’s on vinyl only so get them before they’re gone.

Eddie Thoneick

Saeed Younan ‘Yeah Ha’ [Younan Music]

This is one of my weapons at the moment. Its structure is very simple but it has everything you need to get those hands up in the club! Strong build ups, a catchy vocal snippet and bouncing beats.

Eddie Thoneick ‘Funk’ [Subliminal]

This is my first release on Erick’s Subliminal label. This one goes a bit more into a tool direction with nice stabs and a big break with effects. It came out with a fantastic Harry Choo Choo Romero mix!

Eddie Thoneick vs Erick Morillo feat. Shawnee Taylor ‘Live Your Life’ [Subliminal]

What can I say? Finally we’ve found the time to work on a track together. This one will be out in the spring on Subliminal and it has that summer vibe: a catchy vocal hook, anthemic piano chords and breaks that will make the girls scream. Watch this one.

Omid 16B

Till Von Sein ‘Lied 9’ (Reynold Remix) [Trenton Records]

One of the most interesting and organically structured records I have heard in a while. 10/10!

Omid 16B ‘Can’t Deny The Three’ [SexOnWax Recordings]

Proper retro 303 stuff at its purest, nuff said.

Omid 16B ‘Lilly And Poppy’ [SexOnWax Recordings]

Even though this is my own track, it’s a perfect example of how to sit nicely in the cinema as well as in the club.

Glimpse

Aux 88 Presents Black Tokyo ‘Dragon Fly’ [Puzzlebox Records]

Jerome Sydenham & Dennis Ferrer ‘Jero’ [Ibaden]

Glimpse ‘If I Was Your Girl’ [Crosstown Rebels]

Radio Slave

The Realness ‘Shade’ [Cabin Fever]

The latest and next 12” on Cabin Fever has opulence written all over it.

Radio Slave ‘N.I.N.A’ (Original/Sneak/Mendo remixes) [Rekids]

I made this last year as a kind of house tool and it got a lot of interest from Dixon and the Innervision camp. Now we’re ready to release it and the remixes are gonna be rocking WMC!

Ripperton ‘Leonor’s Lanugo’ (Radio Slave Remixes) [Green]

Two different versions of Ripperton’s beautiful original that are perfect for the WMC vibe.

Stafford Brothers

Tom Neville & Stafford Brothers ‘Come My Way feat. Frank Stafford’ [Toolroom]

Our recent release on Toolroom is in our sets at the moment and it is on the Toolroom Miami 2010 release.

Kevin Andrews feat. Sam Solace ‘Give You My Love’ (Main Playerz Mix)

Even though it’s a ‘winter’ Music Conference, the sun shines through this song.

Juan Kidd & Stafford Brothers ‘I Gave You Everything feat. Rae’ [Defected]

Miami is great to showcase new tunes and this is our new tune coming out just after the conference on Defected.

Matt Tolfrey

S.A.S. ‘Straight Off The Bone’ [FootandMouth]

Inxec and Matt Tolfrey ‘Real Talk’ (Ryan Crosson Remix) [murmur]

iO ‘Little Marvel’ [Leftroom Limited]

Steve Lawler

Tanov ‘Revelant’ (Steve Lawler Mix) [Monique]

Steve Lawler ‘Gimme Some More’ (Guti Remix) [VIVa MUSiC]

Slam ‘We Doin This Again?’ (Steve Lawler Mix) [Paragrpah]

Jamie Jones

Jamie Jones ‘Ruckus’ [Hot Creations]

Deetron feat. Seth Troxler ‘Each Step’ [Circus Company]

Snuff Crew ‘More Fun’ [Gigalo]

What the data says

We also analysed the latest Beatport DJ chart data, and went through the most charted tracks of March 2010 to highlight the cuts that we feel will be big during WMC. Not only were these tracks highly charted this month, but each of them has a certain Miami WMC quality to them.

Session Victim ‘Tomorrow Night’ [Delusions Of Grandeur]

The most charted track on Beatport in March 2010 (so far), Session Victim’s surreptitiously funky deep electronic house number ‘Tomorrow Night’ is being played by everyone from The Revenge, to Robert Dietz and the Dirt Crew, and it’s one of the year’s best deep house / disco tunes. And we’re not just saying that because Session Victim’s Hauke Freer also happens to be Beatport’s IT man in Berlin.

The fact is, ‘Tomorrow Night’ screams of sleazy nights and hazy afternoons, and that’s exactly what Miami is all about.

Florian Kruse, Nils Nurnberg ‘Lovers n’ Fighters’ [Noir Music]

Noir Music’s consistency has been impressive over the past 12 months, with René Kristensen’s label having released a stream of solid deep and funky house grooves that, more often than not, seem to wheedle their way into the Beatport Top 10.

‘Lovers n’ Fighters’ was the third most charted track on Beatport in March 2010, and it’s easy to understand why. With a simple vocal loop driven forward by layers of funky house beats, it’s the perfect mid-set house tool.

Neither flabby, nor skinny, it does an excellent job at keeping energy levels locked down. Useful, when you’re faced with a room full of people who have been dancing for way too long.

Nufrequency ‘Fallen Hero feat. Ben Onono’ (Motor City Drum Ensemble Remix) [Rebirth]

A perfect slice of afternoon soul, Motor City Drum Ensemble’s remix of Nufrequency ‘Fallen Hero’ is destined to be a poolside hit at this year’s conference. Ben Onono’s sugar sweet vocals go wonderfully with a Mojito and a wink at a bikini girl (if it fails to entice her into a conversation, you’ll still be our fallen hero, brother).

Wolfgang Garner ‘Undertaker’ [Kindergarten]

Wolfgang Gartner is well on course to stealing the crown from Deadmau5 as America’s top electro house star, as the Mau5 continues to move in ever bigger circles.

That’s not to say Deadmau5 isn’t relevant to DJs anymore - his tracks still fly off the Beatport shelves - but like DJ Tiësto, the Canadian wonder has successfully broken out of the club music scene and has become a pop phenomenon in his own right.

Gartner’s latest hit ‘Undertaker’ is a masterclass in electro precision, and is likely to be one of the conference’s biggest hits, even though it’s over a month old. Wolfgang says he spent months perfecting the track, and we believe him.

Mark Broom ‘Supersnout’ [Saved Records]

Mark Broom pulls out yet another colourful reinvention with ‘Supersnout’, a superb disco house hybrid that crams a number of different movements into nine minutes of dancefloor bliss.

From filtered disco to space-flavoured house and stripped back techno, it’s a brilliantly mosaic house cut from the long-serving UK techno player. This has Miami and Ibiza written all over it.

DJ Chus, Rob Mirage ‘Back 2 NY’ [Defected]

DJ Chus and Rob Mirage’s January sleeper ‘Back 2 NY’ has plenty more legs in it, and could emerge as one of the summer’s big house hitters.

The track’s simple tribal rhythms, and pumping house chords are superlatively matched to the moment before a peak time record, and as such, it might have ducked beneath the radar of most DJs when it first came out. A wider anthem it is not, but for DJs, this is the ultimate tribal house tool.

Round Table Knights, Bauchamp ‘Calypso’ [Made To Play]

No WMC is complete without a slice of Afro-Carribean funk, and ‘Calypso’ positively reeks of pineapples, coconuts, and lazy summer days. It’s a bit cheap, but so is Miami.
