The right tool for the job

The right tool for the job

There’s no hard-and-fast definition of a “DJ tool”. To the DJ, all records, in some sense, are simply implements for getting the job done. But there’s a category of tracks that are more functional than others, from sound effects to drum sequences to full-length cuts that make a virtue of their simplicity.

They’re usually meant to be layered and looped, rather than played on their own, and that’s never been easier than it is now, thanks to the advanced functionality of today’s digital DJ technology.

We’ve put together 13 charts—that’s 130 tracks—drawing from some of the coolest tools around, from labels like Dubfire’s SCI+TEC Digital Audio [l], Luciano’s Cadenza Split Composition [l], Speedy J’s Electric Deluxe [l], and Butane and Someone Else’s Little Helpers. There’s another shed’s worth of implements from an assortment of producers, including Kenny Dope [a], Carlo Lio [a], Dinky [a] [l], Bedrock [a], John Daly [a], and dozens more.

Here, you’ll find the tools you need to hammer the crowd into submission, screw with their brains, or drill deep into their souls. Remember: if you build it, they will come.

Beatport DJ Tools - Experiments In Rhythm

What’s the distinction between a track and a tool? The ultimate difference may lie in the ear of the beholder. Check out these mindboggling trips by Pan Sonic’s Mika Vainio [a] (aka Ø), Pete Namlook [a] (as remixed by Pepe Bradock [a]), Ultramarine [a] (as remixed by Carl Craig [a]) and others. The Baum Records [l] label is a good source for stripped-down beats for layering, as is John Daly’s new One Track Records label, whose name speaks for itself. Tobias Freund and Max Loderbauer’s Non Standard Productions offers a bounty of fiendishly freaky material crafted with 808 and modular synthesizer. And don’t forget Luciano’s Cadenza Split Composition [l], whose output consists entirely of rhythmic tools and sound effects.

Beatport DJ Tools – Full Length Tools

Here we’ve got more selections that play out at track length, but have the raw functionality of a DJ tool. From Alan Patrick’s shimmering arpeggios to Patrice Baumel’s haunted lawnmower of a track, there’s plenty here to get your hands dirty.

Beatport DJ Tools - SCI+TEC Tools

Dubfire’s SCI+TEC Digital Audio [l] offers a bounty of bonus tracks for DJs looking for a little something extra; virtually every record comes with isolated beats, basslines, or FX. Mostly only a minute or two long, these are designed primarily for Traktor/Serato/Ableton DJs in mind.

Beatport DJ Tools - Toolroom Tools

It’s practically expected that Mark Knight’s Toolroom Records would be a good source for DJ tools (they’d need to change their name, otherwise). Check out these freaky voices, soulful acapellas, and chunky bonus beats, perfect for sets from electro to progressive house.

Beatport DJ Tools – Little Helpers

Butane [a] and Someone Else [a] know the power of a clean, stripped-back rhythm, and their Little Helpers label goes straight to the heart of the groove with jacking drum workouts and just enough tone color to make the mix come alive. For something similar, check out the Rekorder [a] [l] and Kaliber [a] [l] labels.

Beatport DJ Tools – Electric Deluxe

Speedy J stands at the forefront of a movement of artists determined to combine production, performance and DJ skills into a category all its own, and his Electric Deluxe [l] label offers plenty of material for his followers to incorporate into their own methodologies. These sound strips from Speedy J [a], Terence Fixmer [a], Chris Liebing [a], and others will turn any techno set into a trip to the extreme.

Beatport DJ Tools – Minus Tools

Given Richie Hawtin’s pioneering efforts in the atomization of the DJ mix, breaking tracks down to smaller and smaller bits and pieces, it’s only appropriate that Minus [a] [l] would make parts available for the digital DJ to use as building blocks. Check out these short loops from Gaiser [a], JPLS [a], Ambivalent [a], and more—plus the classic (and hilarious) acapellas ‘Techno Vocals’ and ‘R U OK’.

Beatport DJ Tools – Dope Beats

Kenny Dope [a] has always been a master of the bonus beat; hell, you could play an entire set using just his tools. Check out these dope beats from Nervous Records [l], Strictly Rhythm [l], Dope Wax [l], and more.
