The Jump Off EP
The Jump Off EP
Exit Only [Om Records]
7 August, 2007 | 3.18PMThis EP could be summed up in three words: bouncy, funky and dated.
The EP is a four-tracked debut release on Om Records from Baltimore’s Exit Only
.
It begins with ‘Serenade’, a Patrice Rushen sampling disco revivalist number with chopped-up wah-wah guitar licks and spoken-word vocal snatches.
‘Feels Good’ reminds of one of those Junior Jack records from a few years back, only it is in a far more restrained and groove based manner.
The fun and funkiness are continued on the Chicago-esque ‘So High’, with the obligatory percussive shuffle and rolling bumpty-bump bass line.
The EP is rounded off with ‘Rock It, Don’t Stop’, which contains dribs and drabs of all of the above and not much else. It’s a touch boring by this point.
Don’t get us wrong, there are heavy doses of funk on offer here, but it’s a little unbelievable that producers still deem it a good idea to use tired 1970’s disco and funk sounds in their releases.
It’s simply been overdone.
