The house formula still works with Knee Deep and DJ Spen
16 April, 2008 | 11.25AM- Section: Music News Topics: House Nation
For those that wanna live in yesteryear when house music was more then just a feelin’… (yes, you know the script), then look no further then Knee Deep [pictured] and DJ Spen’s ‘Gotta Have House (Do You Remember)’ on Knee Deep USA.
Equally parts Marshall Jefferson ‘House Music Anthem’ blended with Blaze ‘Do You Remember House?’, and hey, presto!
It’s a nostalgic Windy City piano-led groover with a sermon-like spoken message and a chorus that reeks of familiarity.
Yes it’s a well-trodden path that’s been done many times in the past, but I’m a sucker for these kind of records, and this is one of the best.
With both Knee Deep and DJ Spen — accomplished players in the scene — they certainly have enough years between them to wear the subject matter on their sleeves with pride.
‘Gotta Have House (Do You Remember)’ is near irresistible (particularly in the Anthem Mix) with a melody line that oozes with the kindred spirit of groundbreaking house originals from Ten City, Marshall Jefferson and Frankie Knuckles.
Yes, it’s clichéd in parts — “House music is not just music, it’s a way of life…” — but I defy you not to be moved.
Ignore at your peril.
