The death of the celebrity DJ?
16 January, 2008 | 10.09AMThe latest nightclub fad may soon thankfully be over before it’s begun.
Celebrity DJ sets are popping up everywhere in the UK at the moment.
In today’s celeb-obsessed world, stars are popping up at a club near you desperate for a slice of the ££ stuffed pie.
Dabbling in the promotions game myself, I have lost count of the amount of ex-soap opera stars, reality TV runners-up (Kate Lawler, I exclude you as you can rock a dirty techy set with the best of ‘em) and members of so-so indie bands I was offered — all, of course, for ludicrous four-figure sums.
Promoters insisted all were “always passionate about DJing” and have been proud owners of 1210s since they could walk.
Having heard some of the promo mixes, I was not convinced.
Now it seems the whistle has been blown on the whole racket by Kelly Osbourne.
Speaking on BBC Radio One’s Chris Moyes show last week, Kelly revealed how she tricks people into thinking she is mixing live.
“When people call me and say ‘come and DJ at my club’, I make a mix tape and pretend I’m DJing.
“I pull the headphones against my ears.
I’m so good at it.”
Kelly then went on to defended her behaviour, insisting it’s a common trick.
“Do you know how many famous DJs across the world do that?
I’m not even going to tell you who taught me.”
