Tech News Roundup: October 31, 2008
31 October, 2008 | 7.00AMThis week was a grab-bag of tricks and treats that should keep your hunger for sugar-coated gear gossip under control.
Well, for at least a day or two.
On the one hand, there was some deliciously retro goodness in the form of YouTube videos for the Roland TR-808 and Analogue Solutions’ TB-303 clone.
As for more modern technology, there’s a terrifyingly useful new resource for Kore users, along with some sweet new features on SoundCloud.
Go. Here. First.
This post by Matthew Davidson on his blog, Stretta, is a fantastic set of tips for summoning the muses and/or breaking through creative blockage.
Highly recommended.
Using Kore - Guide to Everything
Considering that Native Instruments has been releasing Kore Soundpacks on an almost weekly basis (here’s the latest offering) it’s a godsend that Create Digital Music has created an area specifically for getting the most from the Kore platform.
More Firewire badness
Apple Matters has some interesting and heated editorial commentary on Apple’s direction with Firewire in their latest products.
Keep fanning those flames…
Synthopia re-prints liner notes for Brian Eno’s Music For Airports
Since the terms “Brian Eno” and “visionary” are frequently used in the same sentence, we found this posting on Synthtopia a powerful reminder of how important he is – especially in the 21st century.
If you’re not already up to speed on Eno’s genius, check out the liner notes from ‘Music For Airports’, which was released in 1978.
Here’s a quote from the piece:
“Ambient Music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting.”
(This is one of those times when self-restraint is a valuable skill...)
303 and 808 fun
Synthtopia also posted a bit on bigcitymusic’s demo of Analogue Solutions Trans Bass Xpress TB-303 clone.
This dovetails nicely with their earlier posting on the essentials of the TR-808.
SoundCloud + Twitter = Tweets
SoundCloud is quickly becoming quite the little upstart when it comes to distributing interesting (and not-so-interesting) audio.
This week, they added a feature called Tweet that lets you post your track announcements straight to Twitter.
As for Beatportal tidbits you may have missed, we covered the re-release of Koblo’s Vibra2000, the announcements of Mixed In Key v4 and Loopmasters’ Nick Thayer library, as well as posting a new tutorial on the creative use of noise gates.
