Tech News Roundup: November 21, 2008

Free plug-ins, a portable hardware widget to run them, and a valuable lesson on differentiating between Deadmau5’s music and your own are all rolled up into this week’s roundup.

It’s been an interesting week, to say the least.

More info after the jump.

SampleLogic unleashes the elements

Based on the 6 Elements of music - Ambience, Bass, Harmony, Impacts, Melody, Rhythm – SampleLogic’s “The Elements” library looks like a great resource for progressive and trance breakdowns, if not a lot more.

Here are some juicy review quotes:

“The Elements is an interesting, ear-bending, evocative, and well-produced library that’s squarely aimed at composers who write music for TV and Film.”
--Keyboard Magazine

“The Elements is an awesome one-stop production resource for many musical genres.”
--Remix Magazine

SampleLogic’s product page has the nitty-gritty.

More on V-Machine

A few weeks back, we covered the announcement of SM Pro Audio’s tantalizing V-Machine hardware device for running VST plugs without a proper computer.

Well, it’s finally arrived and both Create Digital Music and Synthtopia have coverage here and here.

Oh, wow! AudioCompatible FireWire ExpressCard!

FireWire ExpressCards are notoriously finicky about handling audio, but Create Digital Music has discovered a product that just might fit the bill.

More info as the compatibility testing unfolds.

Programming tip of the week: Trance leads

Apparently, we’re on the same wavelength as Switched On Synthesizer’s programming blog.

In our tutorial on modulation effects, we touched upon the use of chorusing in creating trance leads.

Well, taking a slightly different approach, here’s a video on the same topic.

Hack: Folder tracks for Ableton Live

If you’re a hardcore Ableton Live user desperate for the ability to incorporate folder tracks into your workflow, Create Digital Music has something they’d like you to check out.

It’s a tad complicated to explain in this week’s round up, but you can snag the info here.

Everybody’s free

To generate kick drums and slap phat filters on their tracks.

Synthtopia has the scoop on a new freeware kick drum synth plug-in and an equally free Moog filter emulation.

The drum generator looks especially cool, so check ‘em out and leave a comment.

Vintage drum machines galore

Just in case you haven’t Googled this or this lately, SoundJump’s new vintage drum collection looks to be a quick and easy way to snag some sounds from legendary beatboxes.

Synthtopia has the details.

Start revving your credit cards

With Black Friday looming on the horizon, it’s time to start considering holiday gift ideas.

Create Digital Music got a headstart on all of us with their reader survey gift guide.

Not to worry, we’ll have some of our own recommendations in the near future.

Promise.

Justice’s samples have nothing on this

And finally… Your moment of Zen.
