Taste Test: Uner
Taste Test: Uner
10 August, 2011 | 8.01AMNext up in our Taste Test hot seat is Uner. The Catalan producer is at the crest of a new wave of talent emanating from Spain; he and his buddy Coyu first came to international attention in 2009 with records for the likes of Diynamic and Saved, using Coyu’s Suara label to bring even more attention to the rising Spanish scene. Last year, Uner, Coyu and their compatriot Edu Imbernon were tapped to showcase their sound on Cr2’s triple-disc ”Mi Casa Es Su Casa,” and this year has seen Uner perfecting his groove-infused sound on records and remixes for Diynamic, Suruba, Skint, Galaktika, Rebirth, and many more labels.
We quizzed Uner about his musical upbringing and his current listening habits; read on for his answers, and find out why he’s got beef with Dennis Quaid, of all people. We’ve also included his Ibiza summer podcast for your listening enjoyment.
Edu Imbernon, “Vitange (Uner Adv Remix)” [Darkroom Dubs]
What was the first record you remember having as a child?
My father was a special vinyl fan and we had a lot of music at home… I especially remember the vinyl of New Order’s “Blue Monday.”
What was the first record you bought with your own money?
First vinyl… I can remember perfectly because I have it in a special place at home: “Crispy Bacon” from Laurent Garnier! Difficult, because I had not so much money, ha ha ha.
Which style or genre of music was your first great love?
Classical music… I’m a pianist and I started with it with the classics. I’m still in love with it now!
What was the first electronic-music event (nightclub, festival, rave, etc.) that you ever attended, and what did you think at the time?
The first one was Florida 135, here in Spain… I’m living 20 minuntes from it and I think its certainly one of the best techno clubs in Spain… In all honesty, the first time I attended the club was to play live. I was 15 years old… I still have the flyer at home – something nice to show friends!
How have your musical tastes changed since you were a teenager?
I was really into classical music as a child, but my life is full of a lot of music from different moments… Electronic, pop, rock, R&B, hip-hop, jazz, etc… I wouldn’t necessarily say my tastes are changing so much… however they are developing all the time; something that generates an interesting mix.
What was the last record (or MP3) you bought?
Osunlade’s “Envision,” Ame and Dixon Remixes… F*** perfect!!!
How many tracks/records do you typically acquire every week—both promos & purchases?
I receive a lot of promos and like to buy music as well because I love to find “the track”! At a guess, I’d say I check out maybe more than 100 tracks per week… I like to listen to all the promos I and to do so I dedicate one day per week towards new music
What format do you DJ with – vinyl, CD, Traktor/Serato, Ableton, etc…?
Traktor for DJ set and Ableton for my live set now…
What’s the last DJ set that really impressed you?
Live set: Laurent Garnier presents LBS @ Carl Cox Revolution (Space Ibiza) last 26th July… No words…
What’s the last gig/party you attended where you weren’t also performing?
Monegros Desert Festival… somewhere I’ve been going to from the beginning. Special feelings there.
Name your three favorite tracks at the moment:
No special order…
Cesar Merveille & Guti, “Maayancholy (Luciano Remix)” [Cadenza]
Agaric, “Who Made Up the Rules (Josh Wink Remix)” [Ovum]
Stimming & H.O.S.H., “My Shadow” [Diynamic]
Which track (by another musician) do you wish that you had made?
Not electronic: Mozart’s “Lacrimosa (Requiem)” with no doubt!!
Electronic: Jean Michel Jarre, ”Oxygene 2”
What’s your favorite record from this year that isn’t electronic dance music?
Fuerteventura, “Russian Red”
