Taste Test: tINI

Taste Test: tINI

Having originally cut her teeth in Munich and now residing in Berlin, tINI, a relative newcomer to the scene, is already being touted as one of house and techno’s brightest new stars. She joined the Desolat crew in 2009 after catching the attention of Loco Dice with “That’s Right,” released on the Desolat X comp.

This month, she released her debut album, Tessa, recorded mostly in Ibiza and named for the friend who encouraged her to follow her musical path. We caught up with her to find out more.

What was the first record you remember having as a child?

A Heidi picture disc!

What was the first record you bought with your own money?

Die Ärzte - “Im Schatten der Ärzte”

Which style of music was your first great love?

First I was “forced” by my brother to listen to wave and new romantics, and suddenly I really liked it. I loved The Cure!

Then came “trash ‘90s hip hop"… big at that time were, for example: Kris Kross, MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice… Important was also the fact that I grew up next to an American section, so I had a lot of US friends who had MTV at home! We loved to perform in front of the TAV to shows like “Kid ‘n’ Play.”

What was the first electronic-music event that you ever attended, and what did you think at the time?

It was the Sunflower Festival near Regensburg in 1997. One big muddy rave! I didn’t have a clue about DJs or genres at that time, but I remember that I had lot of fun. Just the hitchhiking travel back home was a nightmare.

How have your musical tastes changed since you were a teenager?

Well, I am constantly surrounded by music and I try to explore more and more, and as the music changes my taste expands. I was (and I am still) a huge guitar-music fan. Back in the days it was headbanging to Nirvana, nowadays I’m more into chilled Jose Gonzales sounds. I also still like hip-hop, although don’t listen to it as much as I used to.

What was the last record (or MP3) you bought?

Bernard Badi’s ”Bones” (Mojuba) as MP3. I’ve been playing the vinyl already; now I have the digital version to keep my record safe at home.

What format do you DJ with – vinyl, CD, Traktor/Serato, Ableton, etc…?

Now days I play mainly with Traktor, control vinyl and vinyl records.

What’s the last DJ set that really impressed you?

Rhadoo‘s 19 hour session in Ibiza.

What’s the last gig/party you attended where you weren’t also performing?

Amnesia Closing with Loco Dice and Marco Carola.

Name your three favorite tracks at the moment:

Levon Vincent – “These Games (Dub)” [Novel Sound]

Tobi Neumann & Adrien – “Dominos”

Marc Antona – “Spring Pack” [Dissonant]

Which track (by another musician) do you wish that you had made?

Black Sabbath – “Paranoid.”

What’s your favorite record from this year that isn’t electronic dance music?

Radiohead - King Of Limbs.

Berlin or Munich?

Berlin for freedom and Munich for mountains.

House or techno?

House.

Watergate or Berghain?

Berghain.

Which actress would you want to play you in the biopic of your life?

If she eats a bit more, Sarah Jessica Parker.

Strangest thing a fan has ever given you:

Her door key.

Weirdest rumor you’ve ever heard about yourself:

That I am the girlfriend of Loco Dice.

What can we expect from you in the future?

More music and fun.
