Taste Test: Friction and K-Tee

Friction and K-Tee are the drum and bass power duo of Ed Keeley and Keir Tyrer. Chalking up hit after hit with their own productions, the two are also responsible for running the renowned label Shogun Audio. To celebrate the label’s 50th release, they’ve put together Shogun Audio Presents Way of the Warrior, a compilation of fresh tunes from their amazing roster, with an accompanying tour that will sweep across the UK.

As we catch up with these two shogun warriors before they embark on a full-scale assault across the territory, we ask the tough and telling questions for our Taste Test series.

What were your first musical obsessions as children?

K-Tee: Run DMC, Beastie Boys and Jean-Michel Jarre.

What was the first record you bought with your own money?

Friction: Happy Mondays – “Step On.”

K-Tee: Humanoid - ”Stakker Humanoid.”

Which style or genre of music defined your teenage years? How have your tastes changed since then?

Friction: Probably indie music, which somehow mutated into rave in my 20s.

K-Tee: Definitely US/UK hip-hop. I guess I moved from being a complete hip-hop kid into a massive d’n’b freak! Today my tastes are a bit more eclectic.

What was the first rave or club night that you ever attended, and what did you think at the time?

K-Tee: Storm at the Brighton Event in the early ‘90s – I couldn’t believe my eyes and ears! Never looked back.

What was the last record or MP3 you bought?

K-Tee: The SBTRKT album.

What format do you DJ with – vinyl, CD, Traktor/Serato, Ableton, etc…?

Friction: CD and occasionally vinyl now.

What’s the last DJ set that really impressed you?

Friction: Loads! But last time I heard Rockwell he was bang on point.

K-Tee: Phaeleh at the last Shogun event blew me away.

What’s the last gig/party you attended where you weren’t also performing?

Friction: A wedding. I never get any time to go out!

K-Tee: Bestival.

Name your three favorite tracks at the moment:

D-Bridge, “Tokyo Dawn”

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, “Garden (Calibre Remix)” [Nice Age]

Future Cut, “Obsession (Ulterior Motive Remix)”

Which track (by another musician) do you wish that you had made?

Friction: Tough, but I’m gonna go alternative and say Aphex Twin – “Window Licker.”

K-Tee: Glenn Campbell – “Wichita Lineman.”

What’s your favorite record from this year that isn’t electronic dance music?

K-Tee: I really like the Ghostpoet stuff.

Current reading or last good book read?

Friction: Scar Tissue by Anthony Kiedis. from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

K-Tee: I’m a bit late on this, but The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was pretty insane.

Favorite magazine:

Friction: FHM. Standard plane reading!

Favorite piece of gear:

Friction: Gotta be Sylenth now. It’s my new fave!

K-Tee: We just bought a Virus TI; it’s my new favorite.

Friction: Huff shoes.

K-Tee: Edwin Jeans.

Your staple studio snack or beverage:

Friction: Every tour is pretty ridiculous. So wrong to pick one!

Strangest thing you’ve ever eaten while on tour:

Friction: Crocodile.

K-Tee: Elk.

Strangest thing a fan has ever given you:

Friction: I had a bra thrown at me the other night!

Frequent flyer survival tip:

K-Tee: Friction is the airport ninja – no need to say any more.

Weirdest rumor you’ve ever heard about either of you:

Friction: That K-Tee has an obsession with salami!

K-Tee: That Friction used to be good at football.
