Taste Test: Alex Metric
Taste Test: Alex Metric
11 February, 2011 | 4.21AMGive ‘em an inch, and they’ll take a mile, goes the old saying. In Alex Metric’s case, you’ll need to convert the units, but the principle remains the same: he can spin a couple of centimeters of tape into a hit that stretches as far as the eye can see. Alex Metric
has largely made his name with his high-octane remixes for acts like Sharam Jey
, Autokratz
, Evil Nine
, Phoenix, and La Roux. But his new track “Open Your Eyes,” a collaboration with Swedish House Mafioso Steve Angello
, is a reminder that his original productions are just as massive, roping together dirty breaks and nasty electro riffage into huge tunes that are equally at home in the clubs and over the airwaves.
We asked Metric to give us a rundown as to his formative listening experiences.
Alex Metric & Steve Angello, “Open Your Eyes” [Positiva]
What was the first record you remember having as a child?
Either “The Simpsons Sing The Blues” or the Ghostbusters 2 soundtrack!
Which style of music was your first great love?
Indie music, I grew up in the Brit pop era! Bands like The Verve, Oasis, Primal Scream, and Spiritualized. Then got taken over by French house and big beat!
How have your musical tastes changed since you were a teenager?
The main difference is my love for all things electronic I guess.
What was the last record (or MP3) you bought?
I just got the Beatles’ Abbey Road album for my iPod, not listened to it for a long time. My fave Beatles album for sure!
How many tracks/records do you typically acquire every week—both promos & purchases?
Too many to count! Though the number I get sent and the number I actually listen to and like are very different.
What format do you DJ with – vinyl, CD, Traktor/Serato, Ableton, etc…?
Ableton and CDs.
XFM named you “Best Remixer of the Year” in 2008; of all the remixes you’ve done, which is your favorite, and why?
Definitely my Phoenix remix. It was an honor to be involved with my favorite band, and a joy to work on from start to finish. To then have heroes of mine tell me they thought it was the best remix they’d had of the track was amazing!
What’s your favorite remix of all time?
Er, impossible to say! Sitting on the fence for this one. Sorry!
Which track (by another musician) do you wish that you had made?
New Order, “Blue Monday” [Rhino/Warner Bros].
Nice pick. Thanks, Alex!
