Synths dominate BBC Sound of 2009 list

Synths dominate BBC Sound of 2009 list

The BBC has announced its annual list of the artists it predicts will be making waves during 2009.

Although incorporating acts from across the musical board, the list picks up on a trend first mentioned a few weeks back in UK broadsheet The Guardian regarding the rise of the female electro pop star.

The paper prophesied that the waves of white male guitar bands that have dominated the charts in recent years were set to be replaced by a fresh influx of laptop-wielding female stars, predominately in their early 20s.

The piece goes as far as to suggest that during 2009, the majority of A&R’s will be told not to sign guitar bands and instead turn their attentions to the more electronic-based pop sounds.

La Roux, Lady Ga Ga and Little Boots (pictured above) have all been on the tip of critics tongues in recent months; Little Boots adorned the front cover of Mixmag’s ‘New School’ issue back in November.

Interestingly the trend shows the fruits of a new generation of technology-savvy kids who turned instinctively to the laptop as a creative output, instead of picking up the guitar or bashing away at the drums.

So is 2009 set to be the year of the synth?
