Sunny Hills EP
Joel Mull [Audiomatique Recordings]...
10 August, 2007 | 1.19PMAlong with Adam Beyer and Cari Lekebush, Joel Mull is one of Sweden’s leading techno lights, with his releases on labels like Kanzleramt, Railyard and Harthouse gaining him numerous worldwide fans over the last ten years.
His latest for Steve Bug’s Audiomatique sees him developing his rich, textured style and allying it with a few touches of contemporary minimalism, but fear not – there are no dripping tap tracks here, just three powerful, masterfully constructed slices of technicolour goodness.
‘Hilbert Space’ is a swung-out, space-gazing groove that layers static xylophone sweeps over a perky, elasticated bassline while gently pushing percussive rattles twist their way around the top end.
‘Nocturnal’ goes deeper and tougher with an epic Bodzin-style riff and searing, wailing melodies, held down by a heavy-rolling drum section.
It’s serious stuff, and it rocks.
Rounding off the EP in collaboration with Railyard’s Sean Palm, ‘Fluffer’is a skittering, vaguely schizoid slice of clipped stutter-funk.
This being Joel Mull
, however, there’s still plenty of robust bottom end to harness all the rickety percussive licks and tricks.
Tough enough for the techno heads yet sexy enough for those of a less robotic persuasion, it’s another great addition to the Joel Mull
impressive back catalogue.
