Ah, Shy Child — what an endearing name.

Yet New York’s Shy Child are anything but quiet, withdrawn or shy.

Members Pete Cafarella and Nate Smith, pre Shy Child, were both prominent on the New York Chi-chi punk scene as members of El Guapo.

However latest release, ‘Summer’ is far from punk and is definitely not nu-rave, as some critics have suggested.

Instead this very good tune comes across as a kind of hybrid sitting somewhere between as the name suggests a jaunty summer pop record and Interpol caught in a rare good mood.

Brighton’s South Central, have produced some of the past year’s best remixes; sadly, their effort here isn’t one of them.

The same too can be said of the Infadels’ mix.

In fact, the list of remixers looks so promising on this release, but none of them achieve what a good remix should do: either change the track completely or simply improve in some fashion the original.

Could Shy Child have been the sound of the summer?

Perhaps they could have been.

It’s just a shame it’s already November.
